From Billionaire Fundster Chief to the NBA or NFL?

Would a certain familiar fundster buy into the NBA or NFL? A sports website wonders.

Abigail Pierrepont Johnson
FMR (dba Fidelity Investments)
Chair, President, CEO
On Wednesday, Sportsnaut (tagline "the unfiltered sports juggernaut") mused that Abby Johnson would make a great owner of a basketball or football team. The site included Johnson in a list of "10 powerful women who would be great sports owners." (Others on the list include Steve Jobs' widow, the CEO of Nasdaq, the CEO of GM, a star singer, the COO of Space X, the owner of Country Garden Holdings, a Google co-founder, a TV star, and Bill Gates' wife.)

Johnson (currently worth $14.3 billion, according to Forbes) is the chairman and CEO of Fidelity Investments [profile], as well as its largest shareholder. This sports-ownership speculation comes after two Legg Mason alumni were tied in earlier this month to speculation about who might buy a certain baseball team.

"Johnson has both the experience and financial assets to purchase pretty much any sports team the world over," Sportsnaut writes. "She's a prime candidate to do just that if the trendsetter so desires."

Yet Sportsnaut, a five-year-old site self-described as "a haven for creativity and style," offers no evidence that Johnson has any plans to, or interest in, acquiring a sports team.

If Johnson did get such an itch, perhaps she would look to her hometown of Boston, which has the NBA's Celtics and the nearby NFL's Patriots? Johnson knows Bob Kraft, the owner of the Patriots; Fidelity sponsored the Patriots for a decade and ran the 401(k) for Kraft's company, yet both relationships ended years ago. Fidelity was also the first presenting sponsor for the National Football Foundation's National Scholar-Athlete Awards.
