An ESG Chief Resigns

Earlier this month, executive Steven Smit left his role as global head of ESG & sustainability at Morningstar. Smit is based in the Amsterdam area in the Netherlands.

Smit states that he is grateful that he could "lead ESG and Sustainability for Morningstar after starting it from scratch 5Y ago." Morningstar's ESG program focuses on sustainable investing, and uses environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors to evaluate funds.

A spokesperson from Morningstar did not immediately return a call for comment.

Smit states, "I feel my personal mission in setting this up is accomplished, after a crazy ride it's time to regain personal balance and look for renewal."

An alumnus of Harvard Business School’s advanced management program, Smit also holds a master's degree in Economics from the University of Amsterdam. Before founding Morningstar Benelux in 2000, Smit worked as an investment analyst for Robecco and an M&A consultant for Deloitte. He also led Morningstar France from 2006 to 2009.
