At Spouting Rock, Coyne Keeps Hunting

"We continue to add managers," John Coyne, chairman of Spouting Rock Asset Management [profile], tells MFWire. "We're going to continue to look. Because of the drought in terms of asset growth in active management, we think we're going to continue to see a shrinkage among mutual fund families and asset management firms around good strategies that just aren't that large or that are a little different."

Coyne, who joined Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania-based Spouting Rock last fall, reiterates that traditional managers focused on things like large-cap growth equities or mainstream fixed income are not of interest for Spouting Rock.

"We'd love to find a good emerging markets manager," Coyne says. "It's an inefficient part of the marketplace. We don't feel that ETFs really compete there as effectively as active managers."

Spouting Rock AM launched last year as an arm of Spouting Rock Financial Partners, a family office led by president Blakely Page. Page brought in Coyne as the AM unit's chairman and Andrew Smith as its CEO. By the end of Q1 2019, Spouting Rock AM had about $525 million in AUM.
