Who Will Cover Mutual Funds For This Advisor Pub?

A veteran mutual-fund-watching journalist is now freelancing, and a prominent trade publication for financial advisors is on the hunt.

John Waggoner left InvestmentNews in June and has been freelancing ever since, continuing to work from home in Vienna, Virginia (outside Washington, D.C.), he confirms. He previously served as a senior columnist and mutual funds reporter for the FA-focused publication, yet he was laid off in June, he says. The position has not yet been filled.

"I have a search out now trying to fill that position," Fred Gabriel, editor of InvestmentNews, tells MFWire. "We're looking to put that position here in New York City ideally."

"They reorganized the newsroom and basically ended the senior columnist position," Waggoner tells MFWire.

Waggoner's departure came well in advance of Detroit-based Crain Communications selling New York City-based InvestmentNews last month to London-based Vitesse Media (since rebranded as Bonhill Group). Gabriel clarified that Waggoner's departure had nothing to do with the deal.

An alumnus of Northeastern University, Waggoner joined InvestmentNews in 2016. Prior to that he spent more than 25 years at USA Today, writing a personal finance column on mutual funds and more.
