Crystal Ball Check: Who Will Take This CIO Spot?

A managed account and mutual fund shop is on the hunt for a new top investing dog, even as a wirehouse veteran joins the firm in another C-suite role.

Chuck Widger
Brinker Capital, Inc.
Executive Chairman
Chuck Widger, executive chairman of Brinker Capital, confirms that freshly-promoted senior vice presidents Jeff Raupp (senior investment manager) and Chris Hart (core investment manager) have taken over investing leadership at Brinker on an interim basis, after the immediate resignation of chief investment officer Bill Miller. Meanwhile, veteran wirehouse executive Jason Moore will join on June 8 as chief administrative officer.

Moore most recently served as a managing director at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. Morgan Stanley spokeswoman Christy Jockle offered MFWire the following statement (emphasis added):

Jim Tracy was head of the Consulting Group until last June when he took on a new role as Vice Chairman in wealth management and Jason Moore became co-head of the Advisory Platforms & Solutions group. In February, Jim Tracy assumed responsibility for Consulting Group. Jason reported to Jim.

As for Brinker, the Berwyn, Pennsylvania-based shop is searching for its next CIO. And in the meantime, Widger says that he "is very confident" in Hart and Raupp holding down the fort. He says the firm "has an open timeline for finding the right fit for the role of Chief Investment Officer."

Hart is an alumnus of Trinity College and of UVA. He worked at RS Investments, what was then Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, Haverford Financial Services, Credit Suisse, Pru, and Oracle before joining Brinker two years ago.

Raupp is an alumnus of the University of Delaware and of Villanova. He served in the U.S. Army before joining Brinker 25 years ago.

Miller, like Hart, is an alumnus of Trinity College. He did PM work at Putnam and Nationwide before joining Brinker eight years ago.

Moore, like Raupp, is an alumnus of the University of Delaware. He worked at Morgan Stanley and then Merrill before joining Morgan five years ago.

Widger founded Brinker in 1987. The managed account shop previously ran a series of mutual funds, the Crystal Strategy Mutual Funds.
