Wednesday, March 23, 2016 101 Fund Families Win in Gotham 101 mutual fund families won awards last night, with top honors going to Thrivent [profile] and TIAA [profile].
TIAA and Thrivent (in TIAA's case, for the fourth year in a row) won the overall large and small fund family awards. Other winners of family awards included Guggenheim [profile], TCW's MetWest [profile], Harris Associates' Oakmark [profile], and Primecap [profile]. Vladimir de Vassal of Glenmede Investment Management [profile] won the individual "excellence in fund management award" for research analysts. 101 fund families, including the six family award winners above, won awards for specific funds and categories. Of those winners, Lipper invited to the stage representatives of the 39 families who each had at least one winning fund in multiple performance time periods (three, five, and/or ten years). See below for a complete list of the families who won last night. Lipper teamed up with a charity, the High Water Women Foundation. The foundation folk gathered donations at the party, raising money to help pay for new backpacks and school supplies for underprivileged students. The foundation also offers students financial literacy classes, taught by Wall Street executives. Fundsters who donated at least $100 to the foundation last night were entered into a drawing to win one of two brand new Tumi backpacks stuffed with all sorts of goodies. In a new twist on the awards ceremony, each winner was serenaded to the stage by a different song made famous by film. Fundsters tried to match each song with the right movie, making their guesses via twitter, and the winning table received credits for the Mandarin Oriental hotel chain. And that wasn't the only Hollywood touch last night. When leaving the ceremony, some fundsters were lucky enough to run into movie star Morgan Freeman as he was returning to the hotel. Prior to the party, Lipper held its Alpha Forum.
