Can Two Ivy Vets Train Demigods?

A pair of Ivy Funds veterans have galloped off and teamed up with some Goldman Sachs and private equity alumni to launch a new mutual fund shop, with a mythological character as a namesake.

Today Ryan Caldwell, former co-PM of Ivy's flagship Ivy Asset Strategy go-anywhere fund who left Ivy a year ago, unveiled the creation of Chiron Investment Management. In Greek mythology, the centaur Chiron was a great healer and a trainer of a host of famous demigod heroes like Achilles, Hercules, and Perseus.

Chiron, with offices in Mission Woods, Kansas and New York City, is a joint venture between Caldwell and GPS Investment Partners, also in New York. Caldwell serves as Chiron's chief investment officer. Kirsten Pickens, who served as senior vice president and head of national accounts and retirement sales at Ivy before leaving last month, serves as a partner and as head of distribution at Chiron.

Marc Spilker, one of the three leaders of GPS, serves as chairman of Chiron; he also was president of Apollo Global Management and co-head of Goldman's investment management division. The second GPS leader, Scott Prince, is Chiron's vice chairman; Prince previously served as co-managing partner at SkyBridge Capital Management and as partner at Eton Park Capital Management and at Goldman. And the third GPS principal, Enrico Gaglioti, is Chiron's CEO; he previously served as a partner and as global equities sales chief at Goldman.

Chiron's chief administrative officer and strategy chief, Marc Irizarry, also previously hailed from Goldman: he was a managing director and an equity research analyst covering publicly-traded asset managers.

Matt Wirz of the Wall Street Journal reports that Caldwell plans to launch Chiron's first mutual fund, a go-anywhere one, next quarter.
