A Former Sentinel and Gamco Star Dies

A star PM who worked alongside Mario Gabelli, who led her own firm, and who worked at Sentinel, passed away over the weekend.

Stephen Miller of Bloomberg reports that Elizabeth Bramwell, 74, died from a blood clot on Saturday in New York City "after collapsing during her weekly badminton game." The article gives a glimpse into the mind and life of Bramwell.

A New York City native, Bramwell was the daughter of an homemaker mother and an Episcopal organist and choirmaster father. (Her birth name was Thyra Elizabeth Reed.) An alumnus of Bryn Mawr and Columbia, Bramwell started on Wall Street at Morgan Guaranty Trust Co. in 1967, as an analyst. She then worked at William D. Witter Inc., Bankers Trust, and Davidson Capital Management before joining Gabelli's Gamco in 1985. (Bramwell and Gabelli went to Columbia Business School together.)

In 1987 Gamco launched the Gabelli Growth Fund, PMed by Bramwell, and the new fund's performance outstripped even that of the Gabelli Asset Fund PMed by Gabelli himself. When Gamco moved out of the Big Apple in 1994, Bramwell stayed in New York City and launched Bramwell Capital Management. Then in 2005 National Life's Sentinel Asset Management agreed to buy Bramwell's shop. Bramwell stuck around to lead Sentinel's large growth team, before retiring in 2012.

Bramwell is survived by her husband, William Moffatt Bramwell Jr., by her son Austin Bramwell, by her daughter Hilary Bramwell, and by two grandchildren.
