Can DFA Be the Intel of 401k?

Dimensional Fund Advisors' [profile] efforts in the 401(k) business have caught the attention of Forbes.

Matt Schifrin highlights the Austin, Texas-based mutual fund shop's retirement plan business, especially the Dimensional Managed DC program. That program is built from Nobel economics laureate Robert Merton's SmartNest program that DFA bought four years ago. A year ago DFA chief David Booth put Managed DC in the hands of rising star Michael Lane. Lane has landed Managed DC distribution deals with several 401(k) recordkeeping players and systems

Meanwhile, Booth is also pushing DFA into the bundled 401(k) business. Indeed, four years ago in the wake of the SmartNest deal Booth told our sister publication, 401kWire, that DFA was "going to need some help in the recordkeeping area. Then this week 401kWire reported that outsourced recordkeeper DST Retirement Solutions is powering a bundled 401(k) product for DFA.

As for the Forbes piece, it draws from conversations with Booth himself, Lane and Merton, as well as with DFA ally Heather Hooper from Loring Ward.
