A Newsletter Editor Becomes a Risk Czar


To the 4,000 readers of Dr. Ben Hunt: he has a new gig.

Hunt, editor of the newsletter Epsilon Theory has just joined the nearly $19 billion alts firm Salient, where he will serve as chief risk officer.

The Harvard government PhD, who was most recently a PM at the Tiedemann Investment Group, will continue to run his newsletter.

According to a company statement, Hunt will identifying and mitigating investment-related and other types of risks on behalf of the firm and its clients. He will also contribute to messaging and positioning of Salient’s products and services.

SALIENT APPOINTS BEN HUNT AS CHIEF RISK OFFICER

 Author of Epsilon Theory brings academic, entrepreneurial and capital markets experience to new role

  HOUSTON — November 21, 2013 — Salient Partners L.P. (Salient), an $18.7 billion asset management firm, announced today that it has appointed Ben Hunt as Chief Risk Officer. Dr. Hunt most recently served as a portfolio manager for Tiedemann Investment Group in New York City and is the author of Epsilon Theory, a popular weekly newsletter for money managers and investors that examines the capital markets through the lenses of game theory and history.

As Chief Risk Officer, Dr. Hunt will be tasked with identifying and mitigating investment-related and other types of risks on behalf of the firm and its clients. He will also continue to write Epsilon Theory, which has more than 4,000 direct subscribers, and contribute to messaging and positioning of Salient’s products and services.

  Dr. Hunt began his career in academia, earning a Ph.D. in Government from Harvard, where he focused on international economics and game theory. He spent ten years as a professor at New York University and Southern Methodist University before co-founding SmartEquip Inc., a software firm developing parts schematics and diagrams for the construction equipment industry. In 2003, he left SmartEquip to embark on a career in the capital markets and spent six years at Iridian Asset Management as a senior analyst, risk manager and co-portfolio manager specializing in long and short equity fund management.
