Is the Bond Party Over?

American Century has joined Vanguard and Pimco in warning investors that the bond party is pretty much over. Fixed income professionals from the firm voiced the warning in a conference yesterday. Indeed, David MacEwen, fixed-income chief predicted that a bear market in bonds is forthcoming.

"We'll have a mild bear market in bonds. The economy is improving. The consumer has really been carrying the ball. It's time for the business side of the economy to start picking up the slack," he said. American Century fixed income team is located in Mountain View, California.

The warning echoes what many fixed income portfolio managers worry about privately. To date, Pimco's Bill Gross and Vanguard have voiced the most high profile warnings to investors. The latter firm released a special report to investors warning of what it sees as the growing risk in bonds.
