USAA Hires an Ex-Hartford Chief

Dan McNamara, president of investment management and financial planning for USAA [profile], has found his third party distribution chief right on schedule. Hartford vet Keith Sloane joined the unit as head of third party distribution.

In 2011 McNamara told the MFWire that the San-Antonio based insurer was looking to hire a head of third party distribution for his unit by mid-2012 to build out sales efforts.

In an interview with the MFWire.com, Sloane said that he chose to work for USAA because of its long-term consistent performance in all investment categories and the fact that the firm is is so focused on serving its members.

Sloane is assessing his next moves at USAA saying, "we want to introduce USAA to sales intermediaries and advisors in a very surgical, targeted nature. We are not taking a mass market approach. We believe that USAA members should have access to USAA products though the platform of their choice."

Sloane was formerly senior vice president of mutual funds and 529 plans at the Hartford. He left the insurer at the end of 2010 [see MFWire.com, 11/23/2010]. Prior to that he worked at Wachovia Securities and Paine Webber.

At USAA, Sloane will focus on increasing the accessibility of the firm's mutual funds through third parties.
