A Magazine Asks: "Should You Rely on Morningstar's New Ratings?"

The Morningstar team has now given analyst ratings to 447 mutual funds and counting since launching the new system in November [see MFWire.com, 11/15/2011]. Penelope Wang of Money Magazine revealed that number today as part of an overview of the Chicago-based firm's new system.

Money outlines the five pillars of Morningstar's analyst ratings -- parent, people, performance, price and process -- but wonders if the ratings come from "a generous grading curve," as more than 30 percent of the funds rated so far received the top rating, gold.

"It's easy to put a halo on a winner," Money warns.
