Wednesday, December 14, 2011 A Reuters Analyst Wonders if ETFs are in Trouble Are ETFs in trouble? So wonders Reuters' Detlef Glow. The issue, writes Glow, who heads EMEA Research at Lipper, is "ever more scrutiny from regulators and market participants" that may create new rules. Glow adds that the new rules will likely bring improved transparency to ETFs. That transparency may leak over to mutual funds, causing a push for more timely portfolio information even there. He writes that "new regulation will change the landscape for "regular" mutual funds much more than the environment for ETFs." One reason: "ETFs have a useful head-start on transparency." Regulators are now most concerned with the use of "derivatives in general and swaps in particular," adds Glow. Though he acknowledges that these concerns "are nothing new."
