Crash Kills Vanguard's Tech Head

The Vanguard [profile] team is mourning one of its own this month. The Courier Post of Cherry Hill, New Jersey reports that 45-year-old Mike Moore, a Vanguard principal, died on Wednesday, November 9, after a motorcycle accident on Sunday, November 6.

Vanguard spokesman John Woerth confirmed that Moore had served as head of technology operations for the Valley Forge, Pennsylvania-based mutual fund giant. He was unable to immediately provide details on how Moore's duties have been reassigned.

"The entire Vanguard family was deeply saddened by the recent passing of our colleague Mike Moore," Woerth told MFWire.com in an e-mailed statement. "Mike loved Vanguard, and he took great pride in leading teams and so enjoyed working with his many Vanguard colleagues over his career."

Woerth said that Moore joined Vanguard over thirteen years ago in the Charlotte office and became an officer of the company two and a half years later. Moore became head of Vanguard's center for excellence and the beginning of 2009, and this year he took over technology operations.

According to the Post, Moore was riding with two other riders in a private, two-day event on the Thunderbolt Raceway at the New Jersey Motorsports Park that morning, when his KTM Supermoto motorcycle went off the track and hit a guide rail, flinging him from the bike. A spokesman for the state police told the paper that Moore suffered "significant brain trauma" and was helicoptered to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's Mainland Division.

The paper also notes that Moore was the Mid-Atlantic regional director for the Northeast Sportbike Association.
