Credit Suisse Smiles on ETF Flows

Fundsters interested in the growth of ETFs may want to check out a new report from Credit Suisse. In Barron's "Focus on Funds" blog, Murray Coleman highlights a report from Credit Suisse analyst Victor Lin, arguing that ETFs are gaining ground on mutual funds, even among retail investors.

"Domestic equity mutual funds are still seeing outflows this year; meanwhile, domestic equity ETFs have seen inflows in several months this year," Lin reportedly wrote. "Some investors may be moving from mutual funds to ETFs as they look to potentially reduce costs and/or take more control of their investments."

The Barron's piece does not mention how such flows compare between overall flows for active versus passive equity funds, in regular mutual funds and ETFs combined. Since the vast majority of ETF assets are still passive, it might also be instructive to ponder how flows in and out of equity index funds and passive equity ETFs compare.
