Morgan Stanley Dean Witter plans to close its retail-securities business in Japan, according to an article in The Wall Street Journal. The 100 employees in the unit will lose their jobs, though some will be transferred to the institutional securities arm of the firm in Japan.

Amidex Funds, Inc. is developing a personal security and national defense fund. This follows a renewed interest in defense and security products. The new fund will be the Amidex Security and Defense Fund.

Alliance Capital Management reported a 4 percent bump in assets in October. The firm said preliminary assets under management of $438 billion at October 31, 2001, compared to $421 billion at September 30, 2001.
