Give Me the Child When Five

There is a saying among the Jesuits: "Give the boy when he is five, and I will give you the man." This could be some of the inspiration behind Salomon Smith Barney's thinking for the re-launch of its Young Investors Network website, which is targeted for children.

The idea behind the service is to promote "financial literacy and fiscal responsibility" among children. The redesigned offering also features new sections for parents and teachers. It can be found at the following url: www.younginvestorsnetwork.com.

The firm intends for this network to complement its other youth-oriented education programs including SSB Take Your Parents to School Day. This program focuses on middle school students to help them learn about the complexities of the current fiscal climate.

"The web can be a powerful tool for reaching out and teaching our children," stated Mindy S. Ross, senior vice president and director of target market initiatives at Salomon Smith Barney. "It's never too early to begin a dialog on practical attitudes towards planning for your short and long-term goals. These early discussions will lay solid groundwork for young investors to achieve their life goals and successfully manage their own money."
