Friday, May 18, 2001 ICI Adds Outreach to Minority Investors The existing “Investing for Success” Program partnership, consisting of the ICI Education Foundation and the National Urban League, added a third member, the Coalition of Black Investors-Investment Education Fund (COBI-IEF). The announcement introducing the educational group for African-American investors anchored the Thursday luncheon at the ICI general membership. "COBI-IEF is committed," said COBI-IEF founder Duane Davis, "to encouraging African Americans to begin investing early in order to reach long-term financial goals and empowering African Americans to achieve economic parity." The National Urban League 1998 State of Black America report says that African Americans hesitate to invest because of lack of knowledge. The partnership announcement coincides with an online interactive multimedia version of its finance workshop, designed to strengthen the investment and wealth-building understanding of middle-income African Americans. In addition to the tutorials, online features include video clips of African American investors and industry professionals commenting on personal experiences. The next Investing for Success workshop will be held in Chicago, presented by Mellody Hobson, president of Ariel Mutual Funds and one of Fortune’s rising stars. Carole Davis of COBI-IEF explained that the organization is marketing the program through the media, email, direct mail and industry conferences.
