Checking out the Goods

The growing consensus on the ETF vehicle's impact has industry players moving to stay on top of the research. Wiesenberger and Schwab released new data on the increasingly popular investment vehicle this week to satisfy demand from investors.

Starting this month, Wiesenberger's Viewpoint users will have easier access to ETF information. The company currently mixes ETF data with other fund data, but a new option in the software's pull-down menu will allow advisors to select only ETFs.

"Many people are interested in evaluating ETFs separately and comparing them in relation to each other," said Ramy Shalaan, an analyst for Wiesenberger. "Under the new setting, you can compare any of the ETFs to any of the open-end mutual funds. But if you want to look only in the universe of ETFs and run comparisons, you can do that."

The new options are included in Viewpoint disks shipped this week.

Like Wiesenberger, the Schwab Center for Investment Research is responding to ETF user feedback, publishing a research paper on the opportunities and risks associated with the relatively new vehicle.

"ETFs were a [well-received] topic at Schwab Impact conferences in the past," explained a Schwab spokesperon. "Advisor clients expressed interest in learning more."
