Buy Out Leads to Funds

On the heels of its October acquisition of Sanford Bernstein, Alliance Capital is in the midst of rolling out a new family of funds.

Although details are still fuzzy, Kevin Rowell, managing director of the financial advisors and financial institutions groups, has started to talk more concretely about its plans. In the beginning of next year, the company plans on unveiling four or five Alliance-Bernstein funds.

While Alliance is known as a growth manager, Sanford Bernstein has had a reputation as a value-oriented group. In the wake of this year's stomach-churning market fluctuations and with more uncertainty ahead, the value approach becomes increasingly attractive.

Although the funds are still in the development stage, Rowell said the company plans to take advantage of both strengths in Alliance's combined product.

"We're very excited. Value had a very strong year," he said. "Combining the best in value management and the best in growth management is a great strategic complement."
