Friday, September 17, 1999 Odd Lots, September 17, 1999 Japan keeps heating up ... From The Wall Street Journal Japan is the key to buying overseas mutual funds, according to the Wall Street Journal. Diversified foreign-stock funds have returned an average 15.5% in 1999, through Wednesday, according to fund watchers Morningstar Inc. That is a lot more than the 8.0% advance for diversified U.S.-stock funds. Some of the biggest advances have been posted by funds that invested heavily in Japanese stocks. Japanese small-stock benchmarks have more than doubled since year's end bringing many small-stock specialists up more than 50%.
