Fundsters Talk Tech

In The Wall Street Journal's Fund Track column Tuesday, Jon Burton collected fund managers' views on the technology sector.

Some in the industry feel that tech stock growth is slowing. The Technology Select Sector SPDR, the largest tech ETF, was down 5 percent for the year (as of Monday). The fund rose 51 percent in 2009.

But other managers have different opinions.

"Tech is by far outpacing all the other sectors in terms of earnings growth," the article quoted Brian Belski, chief investment strategist at Oppenheimer Asset Management, as saying. "Technology will be an earnings-growth driver for the next several quarters."

Over the last five years, the top-performing, actively-managed technology related funds have been the Seligman Communications & Information Fund, Firsthand e-Commerce Fund, Ivy Science & Technology Fund, T. Rowe Price Global Technology Fund and Henderson Global Technology Fund.

Managers can't seem to agree on how fast tech stocks will grow in the coming months and years, but many feel that as the market evens out, tech will continue to climb.

"Growth is not universal, and therefore the market is going to pay a premium for it," said Jim Awad, managing director at Zephyr Management.

The column also gave shout-outs to the PowerShares QQQ ETF and the iShares Dow Jones U.S. Technology Sector Index Fund.
