How TCW Shot the Soldier, and Other Tales of Gundlach

Fundsters interested in the Jeff Gundlach-TCW saga may want to take a look at Edward Robinson and Sree Vidya Bhaktavatsalam's Wednesday article in Bloomberg. The pair tell the tale of Gundlach's arrival at, and later departure from, TCW, throwing in lots of juicy details along the way.

One interesting tidbit is an account of a TCW employee conference call three days after TCW fired Gundlach. On the call, TCW founder and chairman Robert Day reportedly described dumping Gundlach to George Washington killing a solider who's rocking the boat while crossing the Delaware River.

"Your choices are very simple," Day reportedly said. "You shoot the soldier and throw him overboard, otherwise everybody in the boat goes down."

Day had been Gundlach's mentor at the firm.

TCW forced Gundlach out at the beginning of December, and he promptly created his own competing firm, DoubleLine, and the rival companies are now locked in a lawsuit battle.
