Baron Stakes His Claim in Real Estate

As expected, Baron unveiled a real estate fund on Wednesday -– bringing its fund count to nine -- in the hopes of seizing an opportunity to capitalize on the 'softening' of real estate markets. The MFWire first reported that the firm was prepping to launch a real estate fund back in October when Baron Capital Group chairman and CEO Ron Baron revealed plans at the 18th Annual Baron Investment Conference in New York City.

The Baron Real Estate Fund, which will be managed by Jeffrey Kolitch, is a no-load, open-end, non-diversified fund that employs a long-term strategy investing in predominantly U.S. and foreign real estate and real estate companies, as well as up to 25 percent in securities of foreign issuers that are not publicly traded in the U.S. The fund requires an initial investment of at least $2,000 for retail shares, which are being offered at 135 bps, and a minimum of $1 million for institutional shares, which are 110 bps.

“Real estate investing has always been an important element of what we do at Baron Funds. The Baron Real Estate Fund has a larger investment universe than many similar funds, and given the softening of real estate markets, we see excellent opportunities in both commercial and residential real estate stocks and bonds,” Baron stated. “Jeffrey's considerable experience in real estate investing, coupled with his grasp of the Baron investing philosophy, make him the ideal choice to manage this important new addition to our mutual fund lineup.”
