Fido, Putnam Vie for Top Billing for New Hires

With two marquee fund firms in Boston announcing heavyweight hires on Thursday, local and business papers had to decide who got top billing.

The WSJ's Diya Gullapalli reported on both hires, albeit focusing mostly on Bob Reynolds joining Putnam. In her Fund Track column she reports on the challenges that Reynolds will face in turning around Putnam and the performance issues the company has long endured. At the end she mentions that Fidelity also made a hire, devoting a few lines to the appointment of Michael Wilens.

Fidelity and Putnam's hometown papers had their work cut out for them.

Normally hot on the tail of a Fidelity story, the Globe's Ross Kerber focused his energies on Reynolds taking the top job at Putnam. Globe columnist Steven Syre also penned an article on Reynolds exploring the ways his personal attributes could lead to the company's future success. But of course, Kerber did not let Fidelity's big announcement slip by him, he also penned an article on Wilens' hire.

The Boston Herald's resident fund guy, Jay Fitzgerald, rolled both hires into a two-for-one story deal. He reported on Fidelity's Wilens hire and Putnam's Reynolds hire in a single article.
