American Century Names New COO

Barry Fink has been named executive vice president and chief operating officer of American Century Investments. Fink was previously at Morgan Stanley Investment Management in the capacity of managing director and global general counsel.

American Century Investments, a leading investment management firm, today announced the appointment of Barry Fink to executive vice president and chief operating officer (COO). He also will become a director on the American Century Companies, Inc. board. A managing director at Morgan Stanley, Fink, 52, joins American Century on July 2 and will be responsible for key operational areas of the $106 billion asset management company.

“Barry brings extensive investment management industry experience to his new COO position,” said Jonathan S. Thomas, American Century president and chief executive officer. “He’s an extraordinary addition to our seasoned management team and will help American Century harness the collective strengths of the organization in order to accomplish our goal of providing superior investment management services to clients and investors.”

As chief operating officer, Fink will be responsible for functional areas staffed by nearly 1,400 employees. Specifically, he will be responsible for finance, legal and compliance, Direct (retail) operations and support, Third Party (financial intermediary) services, information technology, fund accounting, internal audit and solutions and planning.

“It’s an honor to be joining American Century, a company with a strong asset management focus and a reputation for putting the needs of clients and investors first,” said Fink. “I appreciate the confidence Jonathan, the management committee and board of directors have in me and share their commitment to building on American Century’s half-century legacy of success.”

Fink comes to American Century from Morgan Stanley Investment Management, a global money manager with approximately $500 billion in assets under management. Over the course of a 20-year career with Morgan Stanley, Fink served in a variety of leadership roles including managing director and global general counsel from 2000 through 2006. During his tenure, Barry worked with the asset management division's president on business integration and a variety of strategic initiatives, and was involved in many aspects of its mutual fund business.

Prior to joining Morgan Stanley, Fink was an associate attorney at Seward & Kissel, a New York City law firm. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Binghamton University and a juris doctorate from the University of Michigan School of Law. He serves on the Board of Directors of ICI Mutual. He is married, has two children and will reside in Kansas City.

Fink is the latest in a series of senior leadership hires and promotions at American Century. Last month the company announced the appointment of Mark On to the position of chief investment officer for international equities. In March, Thomas was promoted to president and CEO and in January, Enrique Chang became chief investment officer. Fink, Thomas and Chang complement a management committee where the average company tenure is 14 years.
