Week In Preview, May 30-June 4

News summary by MFWire's editors

This week in asset management, advisors are gathering in Sin City, fixed income folk in Gotham, and 401(k) recordkeepers outside our nation's capital, after dual Memorial Day and 529 Day celebrations yesterday, of course. And this week is also your last chance to compete for certain industry awards.

Tomorrow Ron Carson and his Peak Advisor Alliance team will kick off their spring 2017 Excell conference for financial advisors. The three-day event will be held at the Aria in Las Vegas and will feature three keynote speakers: Carson himself, founder and CEO of Carson Wealth and founder of Peak; retired NBA player Walter Bond; and ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit. The sponsor list includes: BlackRock, Calamos, Columbia Threadneedle, Counterpoint, Day Hagan; Eaton Vance, Fidelity, LPL, SPDRs, Swan Global Investments, TD Ameritrade, Transamerica, and many others.

Also tomorrow, AGM founder Keith Anderson is speaking to the Fixed Income Analysts Society, Inc. (FIASI) as part of its monthly speaker series. Anderson, an alumnus of Soros and a co-founder of BlackRock, will speak tomorrow night at the networking event at the Cornell Club in New York City.

On Thursday 401(k) industry insiders will gather outside Washington, D.C. for the 2017 Spark National Conference. The two-day event will be held at the Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor, Maryland. Featured speakers scheduled to take the stage at the recordkeeper trade group's conference include: Chris Gaston, senior policy director at Davis & Harman; Joshua Gotbaum, guest scholar for the retirement security project at the Brookings Institution; Mike Hadley, partner at Davis & Harman; Matthew O'Hara, global head of investments for BlackRock's LifePath; Roberta Rafaloff, vice president of institutional income annuities at MetLife; Tim Rouse, executive director of the Spark Institute; Sharon Scanlon, senior vice president of Lincoln Financial Group; and many others. Big sponsors of the Spark conference include: Ascensus, BlackRock, the Defined Contribution Real Estate Council (DCREC), DST, Lincoln, and MetLife.

Thursday is also the deadline for submitting entries for the Mutual Fund Education Alliance's (MFEA's) 2017 Star Awards. The marketing trade group is accepting submissions from small, medium, large, and large-plus asset managers in 36 award categories encompassing communication with financial advisors, retail investors, and retirement plan participants and plan sponsors. There's also a special "community investment award" recognizing a fund firm that makes "outstanding community service contributions." The Star award winners will be recognized at the Star Awards ceremony at the J.W. Marriott in Chicago on October 25.
