A Dozen Fund Firms Win in Gotham

Empower Retirement and Vanguard [profile] just won again at an annual industry awards show in New York City.

Hundreds of fundsters gathered last night in midtown Manhattan for the 23rd annual Mutual Fund Industry Awards. For the first time, the event was held at the Cipriani near Grand Central.

Firms that won multiple awards include:

-Aberdeen [profile], "Rising Stars" for Ralph Bassett, Renee Baker, and Jennifer Nichols;

-Neuberger Berman [profile], "Lifetime Achievement - Fund Directions" and "Hall of Fame", both for Faith Colish;

-OppenheimerFunds [profile], "Newcomer Director of the Year" for Joanne Pace, and "Ad Campaign of the Year";

-Vanguard, "Hall of Fame" for founder Jack Bogle, and "Best Fund Innovation" for Vanguard Personal Advisor Service (the low-cost mutual fund titan's roboadvisor service); and

-Virtus [profile], "Rising Stars" for Matthew Brown and William Smalley, and "Trustee of the Year" for Phil McLoughlin.

Other winners included:

-AQR [profile], "Alternative Product of the Year" for the AQR Style Premia Fund;

-BlackRock [profile], "Hall of Fame" for James Bodurtha;

-Boston Financial, "Rising Stars" for Nick Darsch;

-Calvert [profile], "Lifetime Achievement - Fund Action" for Barbara Krumsiek;

-Dechert, "Rising Stars" for Philip Hinkle;

-Deutsche [profile], "Fund Leader of the Year" for Fiona Bassett;

-Eaton Vance [profile], "Hall of Fame" for Jim Hawkes;

-Empower, "Retirement Leader of the Year";

-Goodwin Procter, "Rising Stars" for Paul Delligatti;

John Hancock [profile], "Deal of the Year" for acquiring New York Life Retirement Plan Services;

-Kramer Levin, "Independent Counsel of the Year" for Ronald Feiman;

-Morningstar, "Rising Stars" for Alex Bryan;

-Northern Lights and Two Roads, "Small Board Trustee" for Mark Garbin;

-Empower sister company Putnam [profile], Social Media Leader of the Year" (a new award this year)

-SSgA [profile], "Sales Success of the Year" for the SPDR DoubleLine Total Return Tactical ETF;

-Stradley Ronon, "Rising Stars" for Nicole Simon -Willkie Farr & Gallagher, "Rising Stars" for Elliot Gluck; and

-WisdomTree [profile], "Fund Marketer of the Year" for Jeremy Schwartz.

Bigwigs spotted at the awards included: Andy Arnott, CEO of John Hancock Investments; Mike Alfred, CEO of BrightScope; and a host of folks from the Empower-Great-West-Putnam family, including Bill Harmon, Rich Linton, Ed Murphy, and Dave Musto.
