Janus Capital Launches Risk-Managed Stock Fund

by: Ki Kim

Janus Capital Group today launched the first actively-managed fund by its subsidiary Enhanced Investment Technologies (INTECH) to be offered via its direct, no-load family of funds. The Janus Risk-Managed Stock Fund is managed under a quantitative process that aims to capture excess returns on the volatility between individual stocks in the S&P 500 universe.

"INTECH's unique risk-managed mathematical approach to investing is an excellent complement to Janus Capital Group's existing products," said Mark Whiston, CEO of Janus Capital Group, in a prepared release.

"Janus Risk-Managed Stock Fund reflects our focus on broadening Janus' product lineup by offering new investment disciplines from well-respected money managers."

By capitalizing on the natural price movements, INTECH portfolios seek to maximize performance with less risk, according to the firm. INTECH has used the process since 1987, reflecting one of the longest continuous records of mathematical equity investment strategies in the industry, according to Janus.

Dr. Robert Fernholz, CIO at INTECH and a former professor at Princeton University, created the investment process. The process relies on precise mathematical methodology rather than fundamental analysis. INTECH begins by identifying stocks with high relative volatility and low correlation. From that base an "ideally" weighted portfolio is designed to take advantage of the natural volatility of stock price movements. Then the portfolio is regularly rebalanced to the target weights in an effort to "capture" an excess return.

Investors can purchase the fund directly through Janus.
