A B-D Buys a $4B Asset Shop

Reported by Tommy Fernandez

The invasion of '40 Act Country by the broker-dealer set is escalating.

Stifel Financial Corp. has entered into an agreement to acquire Ziegler Lotsoff Capital Management, LLC (“ZLCM”) a Chicago and Milwaukee based asset management business.

The transaction, terms of which were not disclosed, is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2013.

“We have known many of the professionals at ZLCM for years and think very highly of their platform. We are excited to welcome them to the Stifel family.” stated Ronald J. Kruszewski, Chairman, President and CEO of Stifel Financial Corp.

A $4 billion asset management shop with a number of big-ticket institutional clients, Ziegler subadvises three Nationwide funds and manages its own Strategic Income Fund.

The acquisition will bring new asset management strategies and capabilities to Stifel’s existing asset management platform.

Stifel owns five institutional asset managers. Washington Crossing Advisors is a Stifel investment advisory program. EquityCompass Strategies is a research and investment advisory unit of Choice Financial Partners. Choice Financial Partners, Missouri Valley Partners, Timberline Asset Management, and Thomas Weisel Global Growth Partners are wholly owned subsidiaries and affiliated SEC Registered Investment Advisers of Stifel Financial Corp.

Timberline also serves as a subadvisor and manages its own small cap growth fund.

This is not the first time that a B-D has made a move into '40 Act Country.

In February, Edward Jones filed to launch the Bridge Builder Trust.

The move was analyzed by columnist Chuck Jaffe and was noted by an Edward Jones executive during a panel presentation at the MMI Fall 2013 Conference.
