The WSJ Talks Up Commodities Funds

News summary by MFWire's editors

The distributors for a few commodities funds are waking with a smile today, thanks to the Wall Street Journal.

Today the Journal's monthly "Investing in Funds" special report included a guide for commodities investors, highlighting ETFs that offer exposure to a few different markets in different ways. Reporter Liam Pleven compares the performance of funds that invest in underlying commodities with those that invest in companies in the sector, and offers a few recommendations for each commodity type.

On gold, Pleven notes the uneven performance of the Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (down 16 percent last year, up 34 percent this year) with the steady appreciation of the underlying commodity (rising for 12 straight years).

On energy, he suggests the iShares S&P GSCI Commodity-Indexed Trust, a broad commodity ETF weighted toward energy.

And on agriculture, Pleven talks up three funds: the Market Vectors Agribusiness ETF, the Teucrium Corn Fund, and the PowerShares DB Agriculture Fund
