Brinker's Ex-Vice Chair Joins a Startup AM

Reported by Neil Anderson, Managing Editor

John Coyne is back on the entrepreneurial side of the business.

John E. Coyne III
Spouting Rock Asset Management
Chairman
Coyne recently joined Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania-based Spouting Rock Asset Management [profile] as chairman and retail distribution chief, confirms Andrew Smith, CEO of Spouting Rock AM. The new asset manager also recently welcomed John Dodd as head of institutional distribution.

The moves come about a month after Blakely Page, president and chairman of Spouting Rock Financial Partners, confirmed the launch of Spouting Rock AM with Andrew Smith as CEO. The move also comes less than 10 months after Coyne left Brinker Capital, where he served as vice chairman. Dodd most recently served as principal and head of institutional marketing at Levin Capital Strategies.

"When I left Brinker [Page] was kind enough to offer me some office space," Coyne says, noting that he was just a Spouting Rock observer before joining this month.

Like Smith, Coyne stresses that the RIA channel will be his main interest, at least for now. He confirms that Spouting Rock is already connected with two big RIA custodians, Charles Schwab and TD Ameritrade, and several other platforms, including Envestnet, SEI, and Vestmark.

"The initial focus will really be around the RIA space, then as our offerings mature we're going to be reaching out to the broker-dealer community," Coyne tells MFWire, adding that they would love to be "custodian-agnostic."

Coyne likens joining Spouting Rock AM to his move to Brinker in 1989.

"I am an entrepreneur at heart. I'm a better builder, I think, than a manager," Coyne says. "This was really a very similar kind of opportunity to what Brinker gave me 30 years ago."

"Blakely has done an outstanding job of building the plumbing," Coyne adds.

He puts Spouting Rock AM's efforts into the context of a broader shift.

"What I see is where the future is," Coyne says. "Advisors and investors are going to be looking for offerings that are satellite to their core portfolio structure."

An alumnus of Mt. St. Mary's University, Coyne spent nearly 30 years at Brinker.

Dodd is an alumnus of Columbia Business School and Dartmouth College. He spent more than seven years at Levin Capital Strategies before leaving early this year. Prior to that he worked with Guggenheim, U.S. Trust, Friess Associates, the Boston Company Asset Management, New England Investment Associates, and Goldman Sachs.
