Who Will Succeed This Key Sentinel PM?

by: Neil Anderson, Managing Editor

A key Sentinel Investments [profile] PM will retire next year, and the Sentinel team is on the hunt for a successor.

Daniel J. Manion
Sentinel Investments
Senior Vice President, Portfolio Manager
Dan Manion, age 54, will retire from Sentinel in Q2 2017 after more than 23 years with the Montpelier, Vermont-based mutual fund company. He serves as a senior vice president and director of equity research at Sentinel, which is part of National Life Group. He is also lead PM for Sentinel's biggest and oldest fund, the $2.3-billion Sentinel Common Stock Fund (the fund launched in 1934), and he is the lead PM for the equity piece of the Sentinel Balanced Fund.

"We currently have a search underway to bring somebody in to officially be the head of equities," John Haase, head of marketing at Sentinel, tells MFWire. "Dan's primary responsibilities are really focusing on his portfolio management duties as part of the large cap team ... We certainly are looking for a more junior analyst to add to the [large cap] team as well."

Meanwhile, Sentinel Common Stock Fund co-PM Hilary Roper, vice president, will continue to PM the fund once Manion retires next. (She has co-PMed the fund alongside Manion since 2010.) Jason Doiron, senior vice president and head of investments at Sentinel, will continue to PM the fixed income slice of the Sentinel Balanced Fund.

When Sentinel hires a new equities chief, Haase says, that new hire will become co-PM of the Common Stock Fund alongside Roper. As for the equity side of the Balanced Fund, the new hire or Roper will become co-PM to handle that piece of the portfolio.

"We can't thank Dan enough for the many contributions he has made during his tenure with Sentinel," states Tom Brownell, president and CEO of Sentinel Asset Management. "While Dan will be missed, we are confident the investment process Dan and his team developed and adhered to during his services of service will continue to resonate with our clients in the years to come."

Manion is an alumnus of both the University of Oklahoma and the University of Bridgeport. He started his investment industry career in 1987 at Wright Investors' Services. He joined Sentinel in 1993, starting out as a senior analyst on the Sentinel Common Stock Fund. He took over as lead PM of the fund in 2004.

Correction: A prior version of this story misrepresented Jason Doiron's role in managing the Sentinel Balanced Fund. Doiron, head of investments at Sentinel, oversees the fund firm's fixed income operation, and he is the co-PM who handles the Balanced Fund's fixed income slice.
