Three Fund Firms Have Made Official IPO Plans: Who's Next?

News summary by MFWire's editors

The initial public offering pace for asset managers is picking up this year, but who will file next? Artisan Partners [see profile], Manning & Napier [see profile] and Oaktree Capital Management [see profile] have all filed their S-1s within the last several months, and Pensions & Investments' Douglas Appell wonders if several other firms will join the rush, too. The piece also examines possible reasons for this rush.

Which other mutual fund firms might IPO soon? The trade pub points to ING Investment Management [see profile]], Old Mutual Asset Management [see profile] and TCW Group [see profile] as firms whose execs have mentioned the IPO possibility. Turner Investment Partners [see profile] withdrew its IPO attempt three years ago, and one off-the-record banker told the trade pub that Dimensional Fund Advisors [see profile] might also be considering an IPO soon. Yet spokespeople for DFA and Turner insisted to P&I that they have "no plans" to go public.

For the story, several industry insiders and investment bankers weighed in, including: Geoff Bobroff, president of Bobroff Consulting; Darlene Deremer, managing partner and advisory practice chief at Grail Partners; Aaron Dorr, managing director of asset manager investment banking at Sandler O'Neill & Partners; Benjamin Phillips, partner and research director at Casey, Quirk & Associates; Craig Sietenthaler, analyst in charge of asset management research for Credit Suisse; and John Temple, president of Cambridge International Partners
