Morningstar Presents Keys to the Kingdom

Morningstar is launching DataLab, a service targeting asset managers, consultants, and other professionals in the financial services world. This online platform provides clients an opportunity to gain access to the firm's proprietary database.

The product's features are as follows:
  • an analytical tool to investigate thousands of discrete data point (including those not found in other Morningstar offerings), trailing total returns, standard deviation, tax efficiency, Morningstar Rating, Morningstar Style Box, sector weightings, fees, expenses, and other miscellaneous manager information.
  • research and reports on industry trends by utilizing a searchable and exportable historical database of performance, which includes customized time period calculations, investment style, and portfolio information such as complete holdings,stock statistics and regional exposure.
  • a tool that can create blended benchmarks and user-defined peer groups among mutual funds as well as reports reports based on rolling performance, peer group portfolio analysis, sectors, and portfolio summary.
Don Phillips, Morningstar managing director, stated, "Now, for the first time, we are taking our customized data a huge step further by offering fund companies and other institutions unparalleled access to our proprietary database, which can be used for customized research, competitive surveillance and product development. With DataLab, asset managers will be able to dig deeper into their own performance as well as their competitor's to uncover historical performance trends and make meaningful comparisons."

Morningstar intends to work with its clients to create product enhancements for DataLab as well as market-driven reports.
