Small Bytes: Deutsche Hires US Index Head

Deutsche Asset Management has hired Patrick Cannon as a director and head of US equity indexing, effective February 2, 2000. Cannon, 31, will report to Jim Creighton, head of global index management, and will be based in New York. Cannon comes from Barclays Global Investors, where he was a principal and head of small cap equities.

Three Janus funds are being added to the Nationwide's Best of America, America's Future variable annuity, bringing the total of choices in the product to 43 from 14 fund managers. The three funds are the Capital Appreciation Portfolio, Global Technology Portfolio and the International Growth Portfolio from the Janus Aspen Series.

Alex Cheung, portfolio manager of Monument Funds Group's Monument Internet Fund was selected by Mutual Funds magazine as its "2000 Rookie of the Year." Cheung's fund returned 273% in 1999, the sixth best performance of any mutual fund last year.

Chicago- based Nuveen is rebranding its company as Nuveen Investments in order to broaden its appeal from a bond house and a closed-end fund specialist to a full service financial services company. The firm will be unveiling an "N-finity" logo during a Superbowl ad which will feature the paralyzed actor Christopher Reeves appearing to walk through digital enhancement.

The ARK Funds have launched a website to promote its fund family, now 20 strong with $6 billion in assets under management. The site not only offers information about specific funds, but also offers general information on mutual fund basics such as a glossary of investment terms.

The MMA Praxis Mutual Funds family, a socially responsible fund complex of three mutual funds, is adding a religiously responsible money market fund to its product offerings. The funds, owned by the Mennonite Church, invest based on the principles of the Mennonite faith but are open to any investors.
