SDP Releases Transfer Agent Guide

Reported by Jason Shank

Securities Data Publishing (SDP), a unit of Thomson Financial Services, has released its 1999 Transfer Agent Service Guide, a reference tool for the mutual fund industry featuring the services and technology offerings of full-service, remote, and system transfer agents. Published annually, SDP's Transfer Agent Service Guide is the first of four resource guides that focus on core areas of mutual fund operations.

"In today's competitive environment, it is important for mutual fund executives to ensure that the transfer agent services they receive are competitive," noted Meghan Burti, editor of The Mutual Fund Service Guides. "By incorporating comparison data and providing detailed transfer agent information, SDP's Transfer Agent Service Guide allows mutual fund companies to match their needs to the various offerings and capabilities of each firm."

The 1999 Transfer Agent Service Guide includes information and proprietary data from 22 service and system providers, and includes company profiles, service offering comparisons, and articles by industry insiders on transfer agent operations. The 1999 guide also ranks each provider by the number of accounts it services.

The service rankings list each service and system provider in order and compares each company's 1999 ranking with its ranking from the previous year. Leading this year's list in the "Full Service Provider" category was Boston Financial/National Financial Data Services (BFDS/NFDS). BFDS/NFDS, which finished first for the second consecutive year, had 11.5 million accounts, up from 10.8 million accounts in 1998.

In the "Remote Service Provider" category, DST Systems held on to its first place ranking with 46.8 million accounts. Among "System Sale Providers", SunGard Shareholder Systems took top honors with 12.8 million accounts, bumping last year's winner Phoenix Systems to second place.

The guide also compares the services and capabilities of the leading transfer agents in 25 separate categories including types of funds, electronic access, dealer sales support, customer statements and qualified plans.

The 1999 Transfer Agent Service Guide is the first book in the Mutual Fund Service Guide series, which has been providing comparative analysis of mutual fund service providers since 1986. It will be followed by the Fund Accountant Service Guide (June), Custody Service Guide (September) and Shareholder Communications Guide (December). The Guides were formerly published by DALBAR Inc. of Boston.
