Goldman Sachs Taps Funds Head

Reported by Sean Hanna, Editor in Chief

Gary Black will be taking a strategic role as head of Goldman Sach's mutual fund business. Black joined the firm in the past few weeks from AllianceBernstein and reports to David B. Ford, managing director and co-head of Global Asset Management at Goldman Sachs.

In his newly created role Black oversees all institutional and mutual fund sales channels, marketing, and client service functions. He will "take a strategic role at sales and marketing for both sales channels," explained a spokesperson for Goldman Sachs.

The spokesperson added that the firm's two co-heads of third-party distribution, James Fitzpatrick and James McNamara, retain their roles in the firm.

Black was executive vice president and head of institutional marketing at AllianceBernstein. Marc Mayer has taken over Black's duties as head of AllianceBerstein instutional sales and marketing. Prior to the change in duties in mid-June, he had been CEO of Sanford C. Bernstein & Co, the broker-daler arm of Alliance Capital. Sallie Krawcheck, formerly director of US research, took over at the broker-dealer.

In addition, Eric Johnson will be partnering with Mayer and managing institutional sales, said a spokesperson for the firm.
